Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani star as a couple on the run in the new action rom-com The Lovebirds, which released its first trailer in January 2020. In the film, Rae and Nanjiani’s characters Leilani and Jibran accidentally run over a cyclist while driving.

A man claiming to be a cop enters their car, tells them the bicyclist is a criminal, and grabs the wheel. After giving chase, the man runs over the cyclist repeatedly, framing Leilani and Jibran for the murder.

The couple must clear their names before the end of the night without jeopardizing themselves or their relationship in a series of wacky and extreme circumstances.

The trailer is full of quick edits and action, including Issa shooting a gun, Kumail trying to kick down a door, car chases, and what appears to be a boat explosion.The Lovebirds was originally scheduled to be a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures on April 3, 2020, but was pulled from the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic closing theaters worldwide. Its rights were then sold to Netflix, which released the film digitally on May 22, 2020
